Instagram started as a closed community for iPhone owners back in 2010. Since then it launched the app for Android devices, evolved and I would even say conquered the world. You can hardly find someone who doesn’t know about this social network. But what the majority of people, both instagramers and non-instagramers, are not aware of is that Instagram is a great place to be for aspiring entrepreneurs because there is a great way to make money on Instagram.
At the moment Instagram is no longer just a platform for sharing photos. Over 300 000 Instagram users are actually doing business there – selling their personal belonging, handmade items and other goods. And although there are no specialized e-commerce tools, sales process goes pretty well, according to our insights from some Instagram power sellers. Yet to become a successful seller in this social network and start making money, you have to keep in mind several things. Here they are:
1. Don’t ignore tags
Tags is the only tool that allow to search something within Instagram, so pay attention to putting lots of relevant tags. If, for instance, you sell handmade jewelry, then each picture should come along with a set of tags like #handmade #forsale #jewelry #handmadejewelry #jewelryforsale etc. This will help you to get those potential buyers who are not yet among your followers.
2. Don’t put confusing tags
If you sell vintage clothing, don’t put random and confusing tags like #Mercedes #fitness or #cake. Yes, this will help you to increase the number of people who will find your picture via Instagram search. But I really doubt that someone who’s searching for a fitness equipment or want to order custom made cake will buy your vintage coat. Most probably they will be confused and even irritated to see your coat among the pictures of dumbbells.
3. Switch on geolocation
Many instagramers would love to buy stuff in this social network, but they want to buy it from local artists and entrepreneurs. So, reveal your location and give them a chance to shop your stuff!
4. Engage with other sellers
Find sellers, who sell items similar to yours and agree on exchanging shoutouts. It will help you both to get more followers, which are, actually, potential buyers.
5. Use inSelly to get more customers
And last, but not least – add #inselly tag to each of your items for sale and get your personal shop on inSelly, a marketplace for Instagram. Instead of selling to your followers or waiting for some occasional buyers, you’ll make your item visible to all Instagram community and increase chances to sell it right away.
