Successful business during world economic crisis
March 17th, 2009

Europe, Asia and USA are facing severe economic crisis that effect every single business market. Both multinational corporations and small entrepreneurs lose their positions and search for ways to improve the situation. Internet is full of different methods of fighting the crisis, but honestly I’m not sure if they will work in real life. The only sure-fire way to avoid financial problems that I’ve found so far is to use the brand „crisis” in your business. We really should admit that „economic crisis” is currently one of the most popular and widespread brands!
A good example of how to make money on crisis is a newly opened restaurant in Lvov, Ukraine – „Antikrizova knaipa” (translation from Ukrainian – „Anti crisis cafe-bar”. In the end of 2008 Ukrainian entrepreneur Yuriy Nazaruk was planning to open a cafe in Lvov, but didn’t get the bank credit. Mr. Nazaruk didn’t get dejected and changed his business plans – he opened a low-budget anti crisis cafeteria.
The interior of „Anti crisis cafe-bar” is mainly hand made: simple shelves with home-made pickled vegetables and „grandmother’s” jams, jars with dollars and euros (a gentle hint on the fact that bank deposits are no longer safe) etc.

Walls are painted with slogans „We don’t need Egypt! Lets go to Carpathian mountains (resort area in Ukraine)!”. Menu consists of simple and cheap dishes like traditional Ukrainian soup borsch, mashed potatoes with fried eggs, sandwiches, garlic bread and others. Waiters give small change (up to few dollars) in roasted sunflower seeds (a popular Ukrainian snack).
A good combination of an eye-catching idea, free of charge publicity (many newspapers wrote about this place) and powerful brand „crisis” made this cafe really popular and guarantee stable income. Do you have such place in your home town? If not, them it sure is the right time to open one!
