Low cost gift business – diaper cakes
In one of my previous posts I’ve already mentioned that one of the best home-based businesses is a gift business. If you’ll think for an interesting idea for unusual presents, then you definitely can make a living out of it. And here’s one of such ideas which will require not more then your imagination, hand work and a very small budget.
Charlotte Fowkes is founder and creator of BabyCakesInc.com selling online beautiful cakes from diapers, towels and childhood dishes which actually are great gifts for young Moms and infants.
Charlotte says that we have made baby cakes for years, but decided to make a business out of it to be able to be at home with her kids. After being fired when she as five months pregnant with her third child because of spending a month in the hospital with her first child because of a ruptured appendix, she decided she’d had enough of working for someone else. Thus, Baby Cakes was born. She explains that each gift is hand created by herself out of high quality items that she would (and have) use on her own children.
The site was launched in November 1998 and by December there was not a single order, but then began a slow-growth business.
Now her cakes are sold in 50 major stores across the country, hundreds more hospitals offer to buy its products as a gift. Everything began with a small site, but now she earns half a million dollars a year.
I think it sounds inspiring enough to think about this idea as your own business opportunity!
